Welcome to Kanazawa
I got here the end of February.
So far not much happening here… except its cold. The day I arrived, the big thing on the Japanese news was that due to the unusually warm winter, spring was coming three weeks early this year. In fact they had actually interrupted a major TV Game show to show photos of three cherry tree flower blossoms. This was not three trees but THREE half open flowers! There were at least six film crews coving the story. This was the biggest story of the century; never had the cherry blossoms come this early in the season. They had interviews with concerned bystanders, one person said that he was going to take the rest of the day off from work, go home, and bring back his video camera to save this event for his three month old baby boy, so that he, the baby boy, could see it later in his life. One girl was so taken by the event that she started crying and couldn’t express in words just how monumental beautiful this was. One person wanted the government to change the “official” date of spring to reflect the occasion. The day after I arrived it started to SNOW!!

It’s snowed off and on every day since. This has caused a major embarrassment problem for the Department of Interior, especially for the Bureau of Weather Forecasting. The head guy at the department was on the 7 O’clock news the night after made a 25 minute formal apology. This was followed with another 30 minutes of various people commenting on how the Bureau of Weather Forecasting should change the way they make forecasts, upgrade their computers, or better still that the director should commit hari-kari. This was followed by 3 minute coverage of the thief of a 2 million dollar solid gold monument in broad daylight from a holy shrine, and 2 minutes of world news.
Later
